Today I want to address a concern that I am convinced EVERY woman struggles with at some point in life…. that pesky, stubborn cellulite that you just cannot work (or wish!) away no matter how hard you try.
I want to give you a better picture of what cellulite is, why it forms, and finally, the best treatment I’ve found to help erase the cellulite that may be holding you back from being the most confident version of yourself this summer.
Cellulite is different from what is considered “normal fat” in that the structure of the overlaying skin and the underlying connective tissue ripples instead of staying smooth. The connective tissue for women lies in a vertical pattern making it easier to create the “fat chambers” that protrude between the connective tissues.
According to Medical News Today, “(cellulite) appears to result from an interaction between the connective tissue in the dermatological layer that lies below the surface of the skin, and the layer of fat just below it”. Factors that can cause this interaction include hormones and aging.
Hormones, such as estrogen, play a significant role in cellulite development as they reduce the oxygen flow, which decreases the level of collagen production. Fat cells are also enlarged as estrogen levels fall, increasing the severity of the rippling effect.
Age also causes a decrease in collagen production, which means the skin becomes less elastic. This can cause those connective tissues to become weaker, intensifying the appearance of the fat deposits.
Finally, genetics also play a role in cellulite development. There are certain genetic factors that impact distribution of fat, metabolism, and circulatory levels. Bad news is we cannot change our genetic disposition, but don’t worry here comes the good news…
Of course, a lifestyle of healthy eating and regular exercise can reduce the appearance of cellulite. If you are a smoker, consider quitting as the toxins can lead to greater chances of cellulite development.
While you are more likely to have cellulite if you have higher levels of body fat, it also appears in thin women (and men!) as well so what can you do? When you’ve tried creams and other topical treatments, you may need to look at cosmetic treatments.
One of the treatments I can vouch for is Quantashape, a quick and painless way to reduce the appearance of cellulite. Quantashape uses ultrasound therapy and lymphatic massage to help sculpt the body for optimal results. After three treatments, I could see significant results in the appearance of the stubborn cellulite on my upper thighs. It feels like a glorious heated massage, and in my opinion, it literally melted the fat away!
Interested in learning more about Quantashape? Click here to RSVP to a Lunch and Learn at Libelle Aesthetics and Weight Loss Center on April 18th from 11am-1pm.
This event will allow you the opportunity to talk with Dr. Lauze Volk about how Quantashape can help you achieve the results you desire. Cellulite is stubborn and annoying, but Quantashape is a great treatment option.
Last year was one of the best of my life.
Both of my sweet girls got married within six months of each other. Yeah, talk about stressful!
Being the mother of the bride (or groom!) is such a special role. I thoroughly enjoyed the planning process with each of my daughters. It does get busy and expensive, but if I was going to spend this much time and money to ensure that the weddings were perfect, I wanted to look and feel my best. While I focused most of my attention on the bride’s beauty prep, I did take some time for a little prep of my own with the help of Dr. Volk at Libelle Aesthetics and Weight Loss Center. Here are my top 3 recommendations for pre-wedding services to feel your best on your child’s special day:
Leading up to the first wedding, I began getting facials every six weeks. Dr. Volk with Libelle Aesthetics and Weight Loss Center, would customize my facial to address whatever needs I had at that time. One wedding was in the winter so we focused more on hydrating my dry skin, and the other wedding was in the spring so we focused more on brightening up my complexion. I ended up looking forward to my facial each month as a time to relax, and I always left feeling refreshed. These facials are great for mental and physical clarity during this hectic time.
Thankfully, I have a lot of happy memories that have left me with what I call “smile lines” on my forehead and around my eyes. Let’s face it, it’s a part of getting older. However, I wanted to address these “smile lines” before the weddings. I must admit I was nervous about the thought of Botox injections but Dr. Volk assured me that it would be little pain with significant results. And she was right! I loved the way my lines softened for a natural, youthful look. I especially appreciated the look as I was in so many pictures between the two weddings! I highly recommend talking with Dr. Volk about your options for anti-aging before wedding day.
Knowing what make up to buy and how to apply it has always been a struggle. I had so many showers and wedding-related events to attend, and I wanted a make up routine that was easy and left me with a fresh, natural look. Bennie, a member of the Libelle staff, introduced me to Jane Iredale mineral make up and I am in love! She also instructed me on how to apply the makeup for day-to-day looks, and for the more special occasions. These products have proven beneficial long after the wedding days were over, so If you haven’t had a make up consultation and application instruction session, set one up today. You will be so glad you did!
It is important to focus on your sweet bride or groom during this special time, but trust me, they need you to feel your best. Take a few moments during this busy season of life to care for yourself. Contact Libelle Aesthetics and Weight Loss Center today to schedule your appointment for any of the services mentioned above, or visit their website for their full list of services.
To say I’m a huge advocate of Dysport is quite the understatement.
I began receiving Dysport injections last year before my wedding. I wanted my face to be as smooth and youthful as possible on the big day, but I initially had my reservations about Dysport as a way to achieve the results I was seeking.
I was honestly very nervous going in to receive the injections for the first time. I am embarrassed to admit, but I’ve seen one too many reality TV shows that feature injectables and other plastic surgeries gone wrong. I was afraid the injections would hurt, and ultimately, I was worried that it would leave me with an unnatural look.
Thankfully, Dr. Volk talked me through the treatment, telling me what to expect before, during, and after the injections.
I want to share with you a few things I’ve learned that I think you should know before receiving your Botox or Dysport injections.
The one thing that helped me make the decision to try Dysport was the fact that Dr. Volk had ample experience with the injectables. She knew exactly where to inject, and how much of the product to inject, so I was left with a natural, smooth look. I honestly believe that injecting Botox or Dysport is a form of art that takes practice. Make sure you find a professional who has plenty of experience and who feels comfortable with the product.
Okay, this step was the hardest one for me! My pain tolerance is quite low, so the thought of injections in my face terrified me. However, I was pleasantly surprised by the ease with which I was able to handle the injections. The face is a tender place to receive little “sticks” but that is honestly all they were, little sticks. Dr. Volk instructed me to take deep breaths and told me exactly where she was about to inject so I was prepared for the stick. Relaxing your face helps the professional see exactly where to inject and tensing up could impact the results, so understanding the amount of pain involved beforehand really helped me see the best results.
It is important to know that it takes a few days to see the full results from your Botox or Dysport injections. I looked in the mirror after my injections in a panic because I still saw lines on my forehead. No worries! In three days those same lines had diminished significantly. A week later, I had the smooth look I was going for. Be patient, the results are totally worth it!
It is recommended to touch up your Botox or Dysport every three to four months. I have been able to go around four months in between appointments and I believe this is because of the products I use to supplement the results. Dr. Volk recommended PCA’s Ex Linea as a way to smooth and firm my skin and to minimize my fine lines between appointments. I also make sure I wear a moisturizer with sunscreen to protect my skin from any further damage. Dr. Volk can recommend the best products to help your look last longer.
If you would like additional information about how Botox or Dysport can help you achieve the look you want, consider coming to the Lunch and Learn event to be held at Libelle Aesthetics and Weight Loss Center on Wednesday, March 21st. There will be a Dysport representative present to answer any questions. Lunch will be provided, there will be discounts on injectables, and of course, a giveaway! Sign up today by clicking here.
Love is in the air.
That’s right, my favorite time of the year is almost upon us… wedding season! Last year I was able to experience this season as a bride myself. While it was a magical time, I am going to be honest, it was also very stressful. There is so much to do and so little time, but it is very important to make time for some pre-wedding beauty prep. After all, this is the one occasion where you can get away with splurging on some of those beauty products and services you’ve been wanting to try! Bridal blogs and magazines are full of must-do prep before the big day, but here are the ones that were totally worth it to me:
1. Workout Classes
Six months before my wedding I joined a fitness club in town that offered scheduled circuit training classes. It was a bit of a splurge; however, I was in the best shape of my life on my wedding day. The classes also helped me work through all the stress that can come with planning. To be prepared both mentally and physically for your big day, I highly recommend creating a good workout routine, whether that be in a gym or on your own.
2. Skin Care Regiment
I struggle with acne and knew that I wanted to get it under control before my big day. I worked with Dr. Volk with Libelle Aesthetics and Weight Loss Center, a skincare professional, to find the best skincare regiment for my skin. Having a morning and evening skincare routine made all the difference in my complexion and my confidence going into wedding day. I also recommend a facial two weeks prior to your big day as this can help give you that special bridal glow.
Another fun thing I did was invite all my bridesmaids to get facials with me two weeks before the wedding. It was a way for us to all relax together and for me to pamper them in thanks of being part of my special day.
3. Wedding Hair Trial
Having your hair just the way you like it on your wedding day is so important because let’s face it, you’re going to be in so many photos! I had a session with my hair stylist before my wedding to go over exactly what kind of up-do I wanted and she practiced until it was perfect. It made it that much easier (and quicker!) on the day of as she knew exactly what to do. This made us both feel more comfortable and relaxed. Some hair stylists will include the trial in the price of the service, but if not, I highly recommend this investment.
There is just something about having a tan that makes me feel more comfortable in my own skin. However, I am not one to use a tanning bed or lay out without sunscreen. So, I opted for a spray tan on my big day. I wanted the color to be just right, so I tried several different spray tan services in the weeks before my wedding. I found the one I liked and went a couple days before my wedding to get my faux-glow. With the white dress, it made a big difference!
5. Teeth Whitening
To keep up with the fast pace of working and planning a wedding, coffee became essential. However, drinking so much left my teeth dull and a bit stained. One of the best things I did was begin using an inexpensive at-home teeth whitening system two months prior to my wedding date. I also scheduled a cleaning with my dentist the week of my wedding for some extra sparkle. I was so happy on my wedding day that I did not stop smiling, so I was thankful to have given my teeth some extra attention.
One last tip, make sure to schedule your beauty appointments well in advance so that they best fit your pre-wedding schedule. For all your skincare and wellness needs, schedule an appointment with Dr. Volk at Libelle Aesthetics and Weight Loss Center by clicking here.
Congrats, and best wishes for a beautiful you on your big day!
Post by Alyshia Powell Martin
Hi, y’all! Let me start off by first thanking you for joining me on this adventure of blogging. Each month I will be posting seasonal recipes and nutrition related advance. Each recipe will be tested by my toughest critique before posting. Because lets be real, who wants to make something that is absolutely disgusting. I will also be taking the time to post nutritional advice that you, as the readers want to know.
Before we get into all of the details of how this blog is going to work, I’m sure you’re a little curious to know whom I am. I am a recent graduate of the Masters of Science in Nutrition and Food Systems from the University of Kentucky, and also a licensed Registered Dietitian. I grew up in Owensboro, Kentucky, and fell in love with Lexington when I moved here straight out of high school to begin my undergraduate degree. My fascination with nutrition and how eating right can help prevent and reduce the risks of diseases came about by watching loved ones make healthy eating choices, and avoid the need for medications. I wanted to learn more of how this all worked, and to help others achieve optimal health too. Now, this dream I once had, is my reality, and I wouldn’t trade it for a thing. When I’m not blogging or teaching classes, I enjoy running, traveling, trying new recipes, water skiing, gardening, and planning my wedding!
Now, back to the purpose of this blog. As I was thinking of how I wanted to start this first post, I was doing everyone’s least favorite chore…. cleaning. At the beginning of the year I had made a New Year’s Resolution that I was going to clean my house once a week. This came about after what I thought was going to be an easy clean turned into a deep cleaning due to the amount of dirt and dust built up. At first I was motivated to keep this new resolution. I would wake up every Saturday, and that’s the first thing I would do. Then, life happened. As someone who was finishing a master’s degree, letting the cleaning task slip by was easy for me to do. Now that my degree is completed, I am trying to be more intentional in cleaning like I had initially set out to do.
I’m sure you are wondering where I am going with the story about me being lazy when it comes to cleaning. Well, our eating and physical activity habits are just like cleaning. It’s easy to do when we are motivated, making the time, and find that extra ounce of energy, but when one more thing is added to our schedule; it’s easy to let go of. When it’s let go of, the dust and clutter continues to build until we decide it’s finally time to clean again. At that moment it turns into an overwhelming, exhausting chore, that we keep telling ourselves we will never let get this bad again. When we make taking care of ourselves a habit by eating well and exercising, its just like making cleaning a habit; there isn’t as much clutter and dust that we want to get rid of, and seems more manageable. We’re able to tell ourselves, this is easy, this is manageable, and I can do this!
Through my help, I have every intention to help make the cleaning task of eating well and exercising a little less daunting, and to help you achieve your personal nutritional goals. The purpose of this blog isn’t only for nutritional advice. It’s also to help motivate each of us, myself included, to live a healthy lifestyle, and inspiring each other along the way. Thanks for joining me, and stay tuned to Libelle Eats!

You Glow, Girl! – Microdermabrasion
By Cicely Carter
Who doesn’t love luminous and radiant skin? The kind that models sport down the runway, the look of sun kissed, dewy skin in the summer. I know I do! Sometimes our topical moisturizers, self tanners and Anastasia highlighters just don’t do the trick! Enter my friend: Microdermabrasion. Although it’s a long and technical word, the benefits and the procedure is relatively short and sweet.
So what is a Microdermabrasion anyways?
The procedure is a “non-chemical, mechanical exfoliation that removes the superficial layer of skin usually comprised of dead, dry skin cells”. By removing the uppermost layer of dead and dry skin, you are allowing for smoother, more radiant, new skin to literally shine. The procedure itself takes anywhere from 30-60 minutes with a licensed esthetician using a wand and a mechanical exfoliator to literally polish away your dead skin. Makeup will sit better on the face, your skin will be brighter and smoother and best of all your natural, radiant beauty can shine through!
But..how can it help me?
Microdermabrasion is indicated for most skin types and a variety of skin issues. To ensure that it’s the right treatment for you, stop by and see us at Libelle. Your skincare consultation is always free and rest assured that we will customize a skincare regimen suited for your skin type and concerns. To set up an appointment use our convenient online scheduler or give us a call at (859) 264-0006.
More Collagen? Yes, Please! – Microneedling
By Cicely Carter
Microneedling (aka collagen induction therapy or simply needling) is a process used to treat facial scars and wrinkles. It is an effective procedure that is minimally invasive, but has a very quick recovery time and you can see results within the first couple of days.
I want younger, plumper skin…Tell me more!
Using a “pen” that has a needle insert, small holes are poked into the skin’s surface (after your face is all nice and numb of course). These micro injuries to the face cause your skin to stimulate collagen production in order to heal. When that collagen is produced, you see the magic results of plumper, newer skin. Microneedling can also be used on various areas of the body as well to prompt the same results.
It sounds painful and what’s downtime like?
No pain no gain, right? Not necessarily! A topical numbing cream is applied to the face or treatment area prior to needling and most clients report feeling pain of about a 2 or 3 on a scale of 1 to 10. Mild discomfort for amazing results for the win! The procedure takes around 30 minutes and the immediate after affects for the skin include redness similar to a mild sunburn. Sunscreen is applied post treatment. Also a specialized skincare regimen will be advised to better care for your skin post procedure.
If Microneedling sounds intriguing or you at least have some questions or concerns, feel free to speak with one of our professionals on the phone and schedule your free consultation to see if Microneedling is right for your skin.
Schedule your consult with us today by calling (859) 264-0006.
Until next time beautiful!
Three Simple Steps to Healthy Skin
that everyone should be doing regardless of age, gender, or skin type!
By. Taevia Boden L.E.
With So many products available and sources of skin care information it can be more than overwhelming trying to start a skin care routine. It can also become expensive. How do you know what products are most important? You may ask yourself, “is this something I really need?” “What is this product actually going to do for me?” “Is it worth the price I’m going to be paying?” These are all important questions you should ask yourself before investing into an expensive skin care regime. There are a lot of fantastic anti-aging products available however if your skin is not “prepped” and in a health state, then you are not going to get the full benefit from those skin care products.
